Massage

Canine remedial massage therapy is the manipulation of muscles, fascia and skin to release tension, stimulate and/or relax the body. Massage is a non invasive therapy that can stand alone as a conservative therapy and also works alongside more invasive/muscle building therapies to help with a better/faster rehabilitation from surgery or injury.

Massage therapy works best with a dog's consent and can take time to build the relationship necessary to work with the dog. I strive to gain your dogs trust and build a relationship where they will feel safe.

Massage therapy benefits include:

* to relieve pain
* to release tension
* to relax muscles
* to release adhesions
* to help restore mobility and increase blood flow
* to flush away toxins in the muscles
* to increase elasticity in tissue and ROM
* to increase muscle tone
* to increase proprioception
* to relieve stiff muscles and joints
* to provide relief from compensatory pain
* to provide faster recovery from injury
* to decrease risk of injury in the first place

Massage is effective as a stand alone rehabilitation therapy for minor injuries but is also hugely beneficial to aid alongside more invasive procedures; such as surgeries. As well as benefiting other rehabilitation therapies such as Hydrotherapy, Physiotherapy, Conditioning and muscle building therapies.

Massage helps to relax and re-balance the body allowing the more intensive therapies to work more effectively, surgeries to heal faster and release tension caused from scar tissue. Massage also stimulates the muscles which is beneficial for atrophied muscles and neurological patients.

Massage is especially valuable as a tool to prevent injuries from occuring in the first place. By keeping the body in balance, relaxed and free to move as it should we can decrease the risk of injuries for our dogs, both athletes and active pets. It is important to mention in prevention that we are asking the dog to perform appropriate exercises, in a safe way/environment and warming up and cooling down their bodies appropriately when asking for high intense exercise. For sporting dogs such as sled dogs, agility, high class obedience, fly ball, hunting, farming..... massage can be valuable to help warm the muscles before action if space is not available to warm up with movement. Massage is most effective post exercise (within 24hours) to release any tension and flush away any toxins holding in the muscles after intense exercise.

Massage is an invaluable therapy for aging dogs to provide the best opportunity for a long healthy life. One of the main reasons for euthanising older dogs is pain and arthritis.

Massage not only helps keep the body relaxed, free from stiffness and pain and keeping the dog moving. But it is what this movement allows/creates for a senior dog.... this allows the dog to keep moving, to maintain muscle tone and stabilise joints better. Massage allows our older dogs to keep active longer and get outside more which fights against age related declines like pain and arthritis but also cognitive and neurological decline like becoming senile. By getting out in the fresh air, moving and sniffing; dogs are also keeping their brains active and happy. They are eating grass and dirt which help maintain a healthy immune system.
Movement is one of the keys to life.

Stef’s expertise cannot easily be limited to a quick review in my opinion, however I would like to share with others the fabulous support Stef has given our fur-babies. Honestly, you need and want Stef in your fur-babies life..

Stef’s patience, depth of knowledge, and ability to listen and work along side us as we used Stef’s massage for Zeus and Sage has been invaluable. As Zeus recovered from surgery following a discovery of congenital joint condition on-going massage has helped to keep him mobile and active. Stef worked along side our vet and physio to aid Zeus to recover fully and continue to live a full and active life.

With Sage our needs for massage were completely different and yet every bit
as important. Sage is difficult to work with because she gets so over excited when anyone touches her, she gets over stressed in new surroundings and with new people. Sage’s cruciate was torn, and surgery was the preferred option for the vets, however Sage was 7 years old and heart breakingly surgery wasn’t on the list for us.

Stef’calm nature can magically work with Sage and help her to settle. Stef has helped us with massage and advice to get Sage not only recovered, but living her best life again, able to go on pack walks and move and run freely again. And, when Sage pulls up lame now, a Stef massage and magic hands are still our first port of call, to support Sage.

Both Zeus and Sage have recently moved to a RAW diet, with Stef’s support and knowledge, this too has helped them maintain healthy movement and they are both very very happy with the change. They are the happiest fur-babies a fur-mum could want to see.

This is a big thank you to Dog-on Adventures massage/rehab for Stef's help with Maddie. At 11 Maddie tore her cruciate and Stef worked alongside the vet to help her rehabilitation and get her back to full health. Stef even shifted her adventures to ensure she was in a special pack which was slow and supported her recovery. She didn’t come on adventures until she was healed and cleared by the vet. Unfortunately a year later she then tore her other cruciate and snapped both ligaments.

Massage helped again, alongside the vet and physio for Maddie's recovery which brought her back to her full self. Now 14 Maddie is still having her monthly massage which frees up those old aching joints. Thank you Stef for all the time and effort you have put into Maddie's recovery, much appreciated.
